The High Commission in Canberra administers the Canada Fund in the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu.
Canada Fund for Local Initiatives
The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives provides small scale, short-term support for projects at the community level through local NGOs and other grassroots organizations such as village councils, cooperatives and women’s groups.
The program is managed directly by the Canadian missions in Wellington and Canberra consistent with Canada’s priority areas for development assistance: meeting basic human needs (water supply, sanitation, health care and education); promoting the participation of women in development especially as decision makers; improving infrastructure services; protecting and promoting human rights and good governance; supporting small business development (including through income support and skills development); and protecting the environment and promoting environmental awareness.
Emphasis in project selection is placed on people helping themselves, and recipient organizations are expected to make a contribution in cash or in kind. The program is widely recognized as making a significant contribution to genuine development and capacity-building in the region.
The maximum contribution to any one project is $CAD 50,000 but the majority of projects are in the $CAD 5,000 to $CAD 30,000 range.
