The Canadian Consulate General in New York is one of ten Canadian Consulates General in the United States. The Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C. is responsible for our overall bilateral relationship with the United States. The Consulates are responsible for specific areas in the U.S. The New York office covers the eastern part of New York State and the states of Connecticut and New Jersey.
These posts were originally established to assist Canadian exporters in developing markets in the United States and to provide consular assistance to Canadians in the U.S. Over time these interests have expanded to include, among other things, the job of explaining Canadian policies, the dissemination of information on Canada and, at some posts, visa issuance to immigrants or to travellers from third countries.
The effective management of relations with the United States and its institutions has always been a central goal of Canadian foreign policy. While Canada is perhaps the least "foreign" of all foreign countries, many important differences do exist. The Canadian Consulate General is here to promote constructive understanding of the Canada/USA relationship, including those differences.

Emergency Services - After Business Hours:
The Consular Client Services Division of Foreign Affairs Canada maintains a 24 hour, seven days a week emergency service for Canadian citizens, designed to assist during periods our offices may be closed. The service covers such matters as deaths, illness, accidents, evacuations, financial problems, missing persons, child abductions/custody, kidnapping, arrest and detention and passport issues. The emergency service is managed from Ottawa and can be accessed on the following number from the United States: 1-800-387-3124 or 1-613-996-8885.
