Message from the High Commissioner

Welcome to our website. The Canada in Nigeria team and I are ready to assist you. Our website offers bilingual information on our consular and immigration services, as well as on our foreign policy and diplomacy, commercial and development programs. You will also find contact details for the High Commission in Abuja and Deputy High Commission in Lagos. If you are interested in joining the thousands of other Nigerians who study in Canada you can find out more here.

I am privileged and honoured to represent Canada in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. My family and I have been touched by the warmth and friendliness of the Nigerian people. This will make the goal of strengthening relations between our countries that much easier. I presented credentials to President Muhammadu Buhari on October 4, 2016. We both agreed that, while our relations are warm and substantial, we can do more to take advantage of the potential that exists. Taking up this challenge, our then-Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Stéphane Dion led our Canadian delegation to Nigeria in November to co-chair the Nigeria-Canada Binational Commission with H.E. Geoffrey Onyeama, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. We look forward to ongoing exchanges, not only at the political level but also in the commercial sector, in civil society, and in everyday personal interactions.

In 2017 we celebrate Canada 150 – the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation. Please join us as we take pride in Canada’s achievements which include a strong and enduring partnership in Africa’s development. This year has also witnessed a renewed emphasis on Canada’s role in the world with an address on Canada’s foreign policy priorities by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Chrystia Freeland, and the release of Canada’s feminist international assistance policy by the Minister of International Development, Hon. Marie-Claude Bibeau.

I encourage you to follow us on Twitter at @CanHCNigeria. Through social media, we wish to keep you up to date on the policies of the Government of Canada and Canada’s activities in Nigeria.

Finally, we are also accredited to Equatorial Guinea and Sao Tome and Principe and we will keep you informed of Canadian interests and activities in these two countries as well.

Sincerely,

Christopher Thornley
High Commissioner
